Rahab By Faith She Was Justified by Works (Hebrews 11:31; James 2:25) It may be hard for us to grasp how a lady referred to as a harlot, would come to be noted as being a person of faith, or as being justified, but if you read the text cited in the title, you see that it is true. Some scholars think that Rahab may have been an inn keeper or a keeper of a public house rather than a prostitute. Josephus historical account indicates that she operated an inn. Nevertheless, in Joshua 2:1, it says that the spies who Joshua had sent out, came into an harlot's house. the Hebrew word, Zanah, from which harlot is translated, means a prostitute and the Hebrew writer and James both used the Greek Word Porne which means the same. So how did a woman like Rahab come to be regarded as an example of faith? Rahabs story begins in Joshua Chapter 2. As already mentioned, Joshua had sent out two men to spy out the entrance into the land of Canaan, namely the city of Jericho. These two men went to Rahabs house because it may have been the only lodging for strangers. It could have been that since they were looking for information on Jerichos defenses, that being a house of ill repute (which would have been frequented by military men) would be a perfect place to overhear that information. Whatever the case, it was not long until the Kings house was alerted to the spies presence in the city, and Rahabs house was the most likely place they would be hanging out. Soldiers were dispatched to arrest them, but Rahab hid the two spies on her roof. She told the soldiers that there had been two strangers there, but where they had come from and where they had gone were unknown to her. Fortunately, Rahabs house was on the wall of the city, so after the soldiers had left, the two spies were able to escape the city by lowering a rope from a window. Then they hid in the mountains until it was safe to go back to report to Joshua. Why would Rahab endanger her life and likely all her household, to help two strangers who were obviously enemies of her city? Thats where faith comes in. All of Jericho had heard about the terrible things that had befallen anyone who had stood in Israels way as The Lord led them to the promised land. They heard about how even the Red Sea had parted for them, how the great Egyptian army that pursued them was destroyed, and how they had defeated the Amorites. Now the heart of all the people of Jericho melted as the Israelites approached their city. The leaders of the city trusted in their fortifications and military might. Rahab decided that to save herself and her family, she would have to put her trust in the mercy and justice of the God of heaven above and earth below (Jos. 2:9-11). So, she helped these men of God and a promise was made to her that all who were in her house when the time came would be saved from death. The cord by which they had escaped the city was to be left hanging in the window as a sign. You know the rest of the story, the walls fell, the city was spoiled and put to the torch, and all its people were killed, that is, except for Rahab and her family (Jos. 6). So, lets sum this up. Rahab had heard about the Israelites and God who was leading and protecting them, and she had gained a healthy respect for God. That fear brought about a change in her life. Some believe that she is the Rahab mentioned in the lineage of Jesus (Mt. 1:5). It would not have been possible for her to join herself to the children of Israel and still have remained Rahab the Harlot. She had to obey the instructions of the spies to live. If she had not hid the spies and helped them escape., would she have been saved (Jos. 2:14)? If she had removed the cord from the window, would she and her family have been saved (Jos. 2:18)? If Rahab or her family been anywhere but inside her house, would they have been saved (Jos. 2:19)? Her faith caused her to obey in all things and thereby she saved herself and her family. By faith Rahab was justified by works. - Pat Kilpatrick - June 2 Song Leader.. Jim Ennis Bible Reader.. Jon Payne Prayer Before Class Mark Biggerstaff Announcements..
